5 ways to become a reader

There’s no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading and kids who are reading the wrong books.

It was my love for stories that brought me closer to books. One thing every reader including me claims is that the book is always better than the movie. I started reading for fun to entertain myself with fiction. And it’s a bonus that I get to learn along. We all know that reading is important and it is one of the best habits to have. Reading not only helps in your vocabulary but it also broadens your mind and assists in self development. However, not everyone of us has found love in reading.

If you are one of them, let me share some tips that will help you to become a reader and fall in love with books.

1. Read short stories and novellas:
One of the common mistakes while building a reading habit is choosing bulky books to read. I know it looks cool and makes you feel like a scholar carrying bulky books but it will take ages to finish reading it. It’s better to read short stories which you can finish in a single sitting. Novellas are usually around 100 pages and very short to read.

2. Make a routine:
If you decide to read a book whenever you get a free time to read, you will never get a free time. You have to make time for reading like you would make time for lunch. Choose the time of the day when you can read alone in peace. Read daily at the same time in the same place because habit remembers the place.

3. Try different genres:

It’s okay to not finish a book. If you don’t like a book it doesn’t mean you don’t like reading. It’s just that you don’t like certain type of genre. So, you should experiment with different genre till you find the one you love. If my first encounter with a book was science fiction then I would have hard time to befriend a book because I would think that all other books are boring too. If you like horror then read horror books and if vampires interest you then read books about them.

4. Join book clubs:

It’s important to have a circle of like-minded people. Your fellow members from book clubs can motivate you to read more and recommend good books to you. Discussing books is as important as reading them since no one reads the same book the same way. You can join book clubs in social media, too. This helps you to explore more books and genres.

5. Read kids’ books:

No matter what your age is, kids’ books hardly disappoint anyone. The reason I am recommending kids’ books is because they are hilarious and makes you laugh. They help you connect with the child in you which is so innocent and full of imagination. And they are very short, sweet and easy to read.

I do believe something very magical can happen when  you read a good book.
